修験道って何⁈山伏って何？ 天狗との関係は？＆天狗になるを英語で

この日のお題は修験道。初めて聞いた言葉。。。もちろん読み方もわかりません。。。

ググってみると、修験道とは山に籠って厳しい修行をすることで悟りを開く日本古来の宗教。山岳信仰とも言える。

その厳しい修行を行っている人のことを修験者または山伏と呼ぶ。彼らは厳しい修行から得た神通力、霊能力、超能力を獲得している。

現在でも、週末に山伏の修業をしている人達がいる。

 この日の私の英訳はポンコツ過ぎたので全面的に書き直し。。。

SHUGENDO is one of Japanese original religions. Some monks started training really hard in remote mountain areas to obtain supernatural power or special abilities, as well as to achieve enlightenment. Those trainees are called YAMABUSHI. They're known for wearing their unique outfit and hat (that can be used to drink water,) and blowing a big shell like a trumpet in order to scare away bears in mountains. So you can recognize them soon.

さてここからは少し目線を変えて。。。

山伏と検索ワードを入力すると天狗も並んで表示されます。

TENGU is an imaginary creature who is believed to live in mountains. They resemble YAMABUSHI. TENGU can be evil spirits or gods depending on occasion.

う～ん、イマイチな説明だ。。。

「天狗になる」という言葉も日常生活でよく使いますね。

個人的には to have a bighead が天狗になるという意味に近いのでは？と思います。

TENGU represents a sense of superiority. Those people are called a bighead. 

Ex.) He's got a bighead! 

トランプ大統領について、He's got a bighead? とアメリカ人に聞いたら、「彼の場合は生まれたときからだね！」と切り返されたのことを思い出しました(笑)
